America: Nostalgic, yet with a different flavor

This summer our family visited my mother’s home in San Francisco. The last time, our daughter was only two year old, but this year she was five. In thinking that we could create a long opportunity for her to speak and immerse herself in English, we decided to stay for one month.

After a two-day recovery from jetlag, we were ready to enjoy a fun summer vacation. The first event was with our Lilica and her cousin Carmen playing together at Balboa Park. As I watched them, I began to think about what a different world this was from our home in Japan. What was amazing about this neighborhood playground was the mix of so many different children from Asian, Latino, European and Middle Eastern backgrounds all playing together. There were no stereotypes about the way a person of a certain heritage would be or act. There was only the innocent social need for play and to enjoy one another’s company. Age seemed to be the only social marker recognized here. I was viewed by all of the kids as an adult and father, not as a typical this or typical that.

Children were the better angels of our human nature. At times, beyond the young social harmony, I also saw profanity in graffiti around neighborhoods, homeless people wandering the streets and trash thrown about in alleys, subway stations and restrooms. I remember near Union Square I went to a drug store that had a group of young teenagers and people in their 20s blasting music from boom box stereos. They had assembled there freely but were obviously disturbing the passers-by and tourists. There seemed to be broken links in society’s web in which the adults forgot good manners as well as how lucky they were to be free and be able to pursue their own versions of happiness without taking away from anyone else’s rights. This city is filled with so much promise and love. Yet there were lapses of memory that I observed and was a bit surprised by.

Overall, the City by the Bay is a truly wonderful place filled with sightseeing spots like the Golden Gate Bridge, Twin Peaks and Crissy Field. I saw it through my daughter’s eyes, vivid and alive. I also saw it through my own adult eyes, some parts dark and dirty. It became an icon of an American city these days: eclectic in its cultural range while severely limited by its own wastefulness. San Francisco is the liberal stronghold in American politics. This being so, I hope it can grow to be responsible for much of the downside of its own freedom. I hope it can clean up and harness its collective cultural pluralism to engage itself more in leadership for peace.

アメリカ：懐かしい中に違いを感じる時

今年の夏、私たち家族は久しぶりに母の住むアメリカのサンフランシスコを旅行しました。前回は二歳だった娘も今年は五歳での再訪です。娘が英語を話せるチャンスを少しでも長く与えたいと、丸一ヶ月の長期滞在となりました。

最初の二日間こそ時差ボケに悩まされましたが、それから脱出すると楽しい夏休みを過ごすことができました。初めてのイベントは娘と彼女の従妹が近所の公園で一緒に遊んだことです。彼女たちの遊んでいる姿を眺めながら私は「ここは日本とは全く異なる世界」だなと思いました。この地域の公園ではアジア系、ラテン系、ヨーロッパ系や中東系などの子供たちが一緒になって遊んでいました。そこでは人種による差別や偏見のかけらもありませんでした。彼らはただ純粋に遊んでいたのです。そのような固定概念があるのは大人たちだけなのかもしれません。おそらく子供たちの目には、私が～人ではなく、普通の「お父さん」であり、普通の「おじさん」として映ったことでしょう。

子供たちはかつて天使のような存在でした。時折、街の中で建物などへの落書き、さまよい歩くホームレスたちの姿、道ばたや地下鉄、公衆トイレなどどこかしことなく無造作に捨てられたたくさんのゴミを目にしました。高級店が立ち並ぶユニオンスクエア近くにあるドラッグストアの前では１０代や２０代と見られる若者たちが数人、昔懐かしい大型ポータブルステレオから流れる音楽を大音響で聞いていました。彼らは勝手にたむろし、その爆音で街を行きかう人々や観光客を困惑させていました。これは社会的な秩序を乱すような行為であり、人として恥ずべき点であるのと同時に、彼らはこのように自由にできる権利が守られている幸運を知らなければなりません。ここは将来性と愛に満ちた都市です。それでも私の見る限り、これらの行動は少し度を越えていたように思えました。ここも随分、変わったなというのが正直な感想です。

　　　一般的に、「シティ・バイ・ザ・ベイ」と呼ばれるここサンフランシスコは、シンボルでもあるゴールデンゲイトブリッジを始め、フィッシャーマンズワーフ、全米一の規模を誇るチャイナタウンなど、非常に素晴らしい観光地をかかえる都市です。それらを見る娘の生き生きと輝く瞳を、私は忘れることができません。大人の目から見れば、中には薄暗く、お世辞にもきれいとは言えない場所もありましたが。ここでは、混ざり合った異文化を共有できる反面、極端な自己主義も生み出しており、それが近年アメリカの象徴ともなっています。サンフランシスコはアメリカにおける自由主義政治の拠点です。それならば個々の自由の意味をはき違えることより、それに対する多くの責任感を育てることが必要です。私はこの都市が社会を一掃し、多文化との共存を導きながら、一層強い平和のリーダーシップ性を発揮することを願ってやみません。
