つくし, Common Horsetail

Common horsetail or tsukushi 「つくし」is an edible delicacy that can be picked from the grassy areas around canals and rivers. Today, Lilica, Katsumi and I went in search of them in an area between the canals and rice fields near our home. It is a prominent sign that spring has arrived.

Near our neighborhood, some hidden treasures.


I found some of medium length.


It took us nearly an hour to peel off the leaf-like skins around the joints.
