Last week's road trip to Shimane and Hiroshima

These sweltering summer days were temporarily cooled down last week as we drove from our humble abide in Kurashiki, Okayama to Oda, Shimane. It was over a three-hour drive in a cool silver rent-a-car, with sudden showers, seemingly endless mountain tunnels and riverside cruising to get there. But with my over-ambitious Navigator (Katsumi) using a GPS Navigation System, my trusty personalized prints of Google maps and a tradition road map book, we had quite an adventure just in the journey. It was interesting to note how many orange tiled roofs covered the local houses, warehouses and businesses, especially near the Hiroshima-Shimane border.

Oda is a small, village-like city where my wifey's relatives live. We paid our respects to her uncle who prematurely died last year from a form of cancer. He had made a similarly long drive with his wife 12 years ago to see us at our Wedding party. It was a good, solemn visit.

In Hamada, we visited a very cool aquarium named Aquas and ate some good soba (buck-wheat noodles). Then, we headed down to Hiroshima for a few days to see another relative and enjoy the big city life. All in all, the experiences were very fun and it was a nice break from the drone of cicada choruses, dripping chins and long work days.
