“Japan is the only country to be hit by a nuclear weapon, and we have a responsibility to make sure that terrible experience is never repeated anywhere,” Mr. Abe (Japanese PM) said.
Atomic bomb survivors group to ask Obama for apology.
New York Times article:
"Obama to Be First Sitting President to Visit Hiroshima."
What I think is going on here is a classic situation of political manipulation or where to pin the blame. The U.S. made a huge mistake, TWICE, when it dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki nearly 71 years ago this August. Those were calculated, diliberate mistakes that would be considered as war crimes in any current tribunal regarding human rights violations. America must take not only responsibility for its actions, but it must also make amends, primarily, to guarantee the peaceful route of abolishing all nuclear warhead stockpiles for good.
Yes, it is a dangerous world we live in. Yes, there are terrorists and other people with evil thoughts lurking, trying to dismantle the fragile democracy that we are well on our own way of undoing anyway. But nuclear weapoms don't make us safer. Things won't get better if we don't, as a nation, face these past offenses and deal with what is now. The world can be destroyed by nucs or by global warming or both. We must take a stand. This is not the time to seek refuge in easy answers. We won't be free to truly embrace wholeheartedly the responsibility of caring for this world and each other if we don't face this.
Saying "I'm sorry" might start a precedent. AS IT SHOULD. To be a leader of all the nations of the world once again the United States must come to terms with this issue. We must take the lead in wiping out all nuclear weapons programs. We must diplomatically encourage all other nations to do so as well. Israel, Pakistan, North Korean and others will follow our walk, not heed to our talk. It's time President Obama. Please make good on your promises when you received that Nobel Peace prize. Prove that you truly earned it by taking this very important step.
