Is peace the absence of war, discrimination and greed? Or is it achieved carefully through valiant efforts at negotiation, tolerance and compassion? The more we blame one another, the greater the cost to dignity. The less we qualify and protect human rights and equality among women and men alike, the more the tendency for the ultimate cost, the loss of human life, seems to follow. We break the cycle by changing our minds. We reach out to others and we can feel the grip of their hands as well. In such a grip lies the warmth of another human being and the life they entrust with our own. It is this lesson that we must not only learn, but must also teach to our children to perpetuate the growing potential for peace.
